Alvar Aalto Architect Vol. 20 – Maison Louis Carré 1956–63 is a part of the outstanding Alvar Aalto Architect monograph series published by the Alvar Aalto Foundation. The book examines the prestigious private house commissioned by the Parisian art dealer and collector Louis Carré and designed by Alvar Aalto in the village of Bazoches-sur-Gyuonne between 1956 and 1963. Maison Louis Carré has been described as the most carefully executed and detailed of the private houses designed by Alvar Aalto since Villa Mairea. The Alvar Aalto Architect Vol. 20 contains expert articles that have been written by Ásdis Ólafsdóttir, Esa Laaksonen, Antoine Terrasse and Irmelin Lebeer. Ólafsdóttir’s essay deals with life in the house and the complex process of designing the interiors and furniture. Esa Laaksonen’s essay discusses the architecture of the building as a complete work of art and its relationship to Aalto’s other designs. Antoine Terrasse’s article focuses on Louis Carré and his rich and eventful life. This biographical study is completed by his interview by Irmelin Lebeer conducted in the 1960s. The book also contains concise presentations of other works produced contemporaneously by Aalto’s office between 1954 and 1957. The book has been lavishly illustrated with architectural drawings, historical archive photographs and new architectural colour photos. The book is the 20th volume in Alvar Aalto Architect monograph series.
