Daido Moriyama, who was born close to Osaka in 1938, is-along with Nobuyoshi Araki-one of the most influential representatives of contemporary Japanese photography. Influenced by the visual concepts developed by Weegee and William Klein, Moriyama's unmistakable style has been evolving since the seventies. Aptly characterized as a "hunter of light," Moriyama's photographs attract with their light/dark contrast and diffuse layers of gray. His preference for the atmospheric and enigmatic always leads to an abstraction of the visual motif. This book features previously unpublished photographs taken in the Tokyo district of Shinjuku, whose labyrinthine streets and dark zones have always enchanted Moriyama. The result is a fascinating panorama of black-and-white photographs, taken with the speed of snapshots, but subjected to long processes in the darkroom.
