New-York-based artist David Reed (born in San Diego in 1946) uses film and video as an inexhaustible source of ideas for his abstract paintings. He s쳮ds in transposing various elements of cinematic imagery in such a way that the individual image retains the essential character of a film sequence. The long, narrow format of his canvases also corresponds to the cinema screen. In his installation "Vertigo" Reed makes direct reference to the art of film by quoting the title of Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 thriller. What fascinated the artist about this particular cinematic masterpiece was its inextricable merging of reality and fiction. As in the cinema, the spectator cannot grasp in a single glance the full scope of his looping, curving compositions whose transparent brilliance and dramatic use of light betray a profound knowledge of Italian Baroque painting. This catalogue, in a long, narrow format reiterating the concept of the film reel, presents 17 works from the period 1988 to 1993.
